» The floor of the stock exchange is not filled with traders doing their day jobs anymore; instead, the market is primarily run by exchange bots that have learned to trade their stocks with one another. Articles are being composed by writing algorithms instead of human authors.
» Automation unlocks time for additional research and development, which leads to further automation, and the cycle progresses. For example, Amazon began as an online bookstore. In Amazon warehouses, the company implemented storage-pod-fetching robots capable of efficiently tracking inventory logistics. With the utility of automation they are expanding into a company capable of selling just about every product under the sun. Over time, fewer employees will be necessary in Amazon’s workforce. Amazon has even recently received F.A.A. permission to test drone delivery flight. Inversely, Borders bookstores failed to evolve and ride the trend toward automated logistics, and as a result, they were pulled under by the wave of change.
» Driverless cars and trucks are on the verge of finding widespread usage. Developers such as Google and Tesla are spearheading the driverless car revolution. The trucking industry will soon vanish once trucks with narrow (specialized) a.i. become commercially available. Analysts are predicting that millions of truck drivers are poised to lose their jobs as the trucking industry starts becoming driverless in as soon as five years. Due massive number of vehicles on the road already, driverless cars might take 20-25 years to replace current vehicles. Soon enough, though, automated vehicle pilot projects will roll out in 6-10 U.S. cities later next year, targeting places such as college campuses, airports, and urban environments.
» These days, art is often digitally rendered. Modern editing programs allow manipulation of anything from photographs, to animations, to website elements. But the premiere tool, Photoshop, is powerful not only because it provides digital canvases, but because it automates a multitude of graphical functions. For example, aspects like gradients!
» As a digital artist, automation is closely involved with my creativity. In taking a course on creative coding, one of the questions I discussed was to what extent art can still be considered such when it is made with the aid of computer software.
» In the economy we are heading toward, the occupations that require artistic, design-oriented, or otherwise creative talents will be some of those that will remain the longest. Although, even those forms of expressions could someday be replicated by evolved creativity emulations!
